We transform used oil into High-Quality Lubricants

Turning Waste into Wealth: How MLR is Giving Used Oil a Second Life

Every year, millions of liters of used oil, whether from engines, machines, or kitchens, are discarded improperly across Africa, posing serious environmental and health risks. But what if we told you that used oil is not waste at all? In fact, used oil is worth money, and companies like MLR (Mozambique Lube Refinery) are proving it by transforming what’s often seen as pollution into high-quality, reusable products.

Welcome to the circular economy in action—where waste becomes wealth.

Why Is Used Oil Worth Money?

Used oil, particularly used motor oil, retains many of its original properties even after it has served its initial purpose. While contaminants like dirt, water, and metal particles degrade its effectiveness, the base oil itself remains reusable with the right refining process.

This makes used oil a valuable raw material.

Instead of spending energy and resources drilling new crude oil, re-refining used oil is cheaper, cleaner, and more sustainable. That’s why companies, governments, and even small collectors now recognize that used oil has market value—when collected, cleaned, and processed properly.

At MLR, we tap into this opportunity by collecting used oil from industries, garages, and restaurants across Mozambique and turning it into premium lubricants that power engines, machinery, and infrastructure across Africa.

How Can Waste Be Converted to Wealth?

The key to converting waste to wealth lies in innovation, infrastructure, and education.

At MLR, we use advanced refining technology to remove impurities from used oil, restoring its performance and extending its life cycle. This process is far more energy-efficient than producing lubricants from virgin crude oil.

But beyond the technology, it’s about systems. MLR is helping to build a sustainable collection network where used oil is no longer dumped but recovered, sold, and transformed into valuable products. This approach not only reduces pollution but also creates jobs, supports small businesses, and strengthens Mozambique’s economy.

Whether it’s through local collection partners or industry collaborations, we’re creating a model where environmental responsibility also means economic opportunity.

Can Used Motor Oil Be Reused?

Absolutely, used motor oil can be reused, but not in its contaminated form. When motor oil becomes dirty, it doesn’t “wear out.” It simply needs to be cleaned and reconditioned.

MLR’s re-refining process removes contaminants such as:

  • Heavy metals
  • Water
  • Sludge
  • Fuel residues

What’s left is a reusable base oil, which we then blend with additives to create new, high-performance lubricants. These lubricants meet industry standards and can be used in cars, trucks, agricultural machinery, and industrial equipment.

So yes, your old engine oil can live again—in a clean, powerful new form.

What Happens to Used Cooking Oil from Restaurants?

Used cooking oil, while not suitable for engines, also holds untapped potential.

In Mozambique, restaurants and food businesses generate tons of waste oil every month. If dumped, this oil clogs drains, pollutes waterways, and damages infrastructure. But with proper handling, used cooking oil can be collected and processed into biodiesel, soap, or other industrial products.

At MLR, we are working with partners to expand the recovery and reuse of used cooking oils, helping restaurants reduce waste and even turn a profit from their byproducts.

By keeping used cooking oil out of the waste stream and turning it into useful materials, we continue our mission of transforming every drop of waste into a source of value.

Conclusion: A Cleaner Future, One Drop at a Time

At MLR, we believe that the future of Africa’s energy lies not just in new sources, but in smarter use of existing ones. Used oil isn’t just waste—it’s a resource waiting to be unlocked.

By re-refining used motor oil and exploring new applications for used cooking oil, we’re protecting the environment, supporting the circular economy, and helping to build a greener, wealthier Mozambique.
